What Is Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency is a digital/virtual currency designed to work and function as a medium of exchange. At its basic core, it uses cryptography to verify and secure transactions.

Cryptography is also used to control the creation of new units of a particular cryptocurrency. Each cryptocurrency has different algorithms that ultimately determine how and when new units are created.

Every cryptocurrency has an eventual finite supply and only so many of each will ever come into existence. Bitcoins supply for example, is capped at 21 million bitcoin. That is all that will ever exist. Currently there are 18,318,637/21,000,000 in circulating supply. That leaves only 2,691,363 left to the mined. Nobody really knows what will happen once the last bitcoin is mined. Enjoy the news!
